约翰·布朗是十九世纪美国人民反对黑人奴录制斗争光辉历史上的英雄人物，是美国度奴运动革命派的杰出领袖。他为推翻腐朽反动的黑人奴隶制，为黑人奴隶的解放事业献出了自己的一切。1859年10月，他率领一支由黑人和白人组成的队伍,在哈普渡发动了震撼全国的反奴隶制武装起义，不幸被俘，壮烈牺牲。在就义前,他在给美国人民留下的气壮山河的遗书中指出：“我约翰·布朗，现在坚信只有用鲜血才能洗清这个有罪的国土的罪恶。”在随后爆发的1861-1865年内战(南北战争)中,美国人民终于实现了约翰布朗的志,用革命暴力推翻了南部种植园奴隶主的反动统治，废除了黑人奴隶制度。
无产阶级的伟大革命导师马克思和恩格斯与约翰·布朗是同时代的人。他们密切注意并坚决支持美国的反奴隶制运动，对约翰·布朗在美国历史上所起的进步作用给予很高的评价。在布朗牺牲后不久，马克思写道: “现在世界上所发生的最大的事件，一方面是由于布朗的死而展开的美国的奴索运动,另一方面是俄面的奴案运动。” 恩格斯认为，约翰·布朗和哈普渡起义的坚决拥护者、后来的第一国际会员温德尔·非力浦斯对于消灭美国奴隶制的贡献比任何人都大。
约翰布朗是美国废奴运动中涌现出来的一个杰出战士，不同于资产阶级鼓吹的林肯，他是真的一心一意为了奴隶们的解放而斗争的，而且为了这场斗争牺牲了自己的一切。在他牺牲后，美国广大人民群众继续高唱着为纪念他所作的《约翰·布朗的遗体》这首革命战歌继续战斗，并最终推翻了美国的反动奴隶制度。
在1861年秋天，威廉·韦斯顿·巴顿[1]创作了《新约翰·布朗之歌》，并于1861年12月16日在《芝加哥论坛报》上发表。
通行版本的《约翰·布朗的遗体》节奏轻快，但是歌词较短。相比之下，威廉·韦斯顿·巴顿的版本则有更加丰富的歌词内容，而且虽然它也包含了一些宗教的内容，但是相较来说算是无伤大雅。出于种种原因，《新约翰·布朗之歌》并没有在中国流传，也没有对应的中文版本。因此在和其他同志的合作下，特地对这首歌进行了中文翻译，并做了中英双语的对照，可以给同志们参考一下。
